Regulations Governing the Introduction of the Internship System Have Entered into Force

Within the framework of the amendments to the Labor Code of the Republic of Armenia, relevant regulations governing the introduction of the internship system have entered into force.

These regulations aim to strengthen the link between education and the labor market, contribute to the development of a qualified workforce and enhance competitiveness in the labor market. They are also intended to support young people and individuals entering the labor market for the first time by helping them become familiar with labor market trends and facilitating their integration into the labor market.

The relevant provisions regulate relations related to the engagement of interns by employers. Accordingly, an intern is a person who, while studying at an educational institution-implementing initial vocational, secondary vocational or higher professional education programs, or within one year after graduation, is engaged by an employer to gain work experience in a specific occupation, qualification or position.

At the same time, it is established that:

  • an employer has the right to organize an internship for a period of up to 2 months, no more than once, by concluding an internship agreement with the intern, without the right to extend it;
  • the number of interns at an employer may not exceed 10% of the total number of employees at that time;
  • an intern may be engaged in work and gain work experience for no more than 5 days per week, 4 hours per day, and 20 hours per week, while maintaining the legally prescribed breaks for rest and meals;
  • the period during which an intern gains work experience at an employer is not considered employment service for the purposes of calculating work experience;
  • the intern’s remuneration is determined by mutual agreement between the parties.
